GSL Education are currently recruiting for a dedicated, resilient, and compassionate Teaching Assistant to work within a specialist secondary educational setting in York.

This is a rewarding opportunity for individuals who are passionate about supporting students who require an alternative approach to education. You will primarily work within a specialist provision for secondary-aged learners who may have experienced interruptions to their education or require additional behavioural, emotional, and academic support. Through positive relationships and tailored interventions, you will help students re-engage with learning and achieve their potential.

About the Role:

As a Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to provide classroom, one-to-one, and small-group support. You will help create a structured, inclusive, and nurturing environment that promotes positive behaviour, emotional wellbeing, and successful learning outcomes.

Core Responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant:

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support to help students engage positively with learning
  • Support learners with social, emotional, behavioural, and additional learning needs using positive intervention strategies
  • Assist teachers in delivering engaging lessons and maintaining a structured classroom environment
  • Encourage positive behaviour, resilience, confidence, and independence throughout the school day
  • Monitor student progress and provide feedback to teaching and pastoral staff where appropriate
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment that enables students to thrive

As the Ideal Teaching Assistant, You Should Have:

  • Experience working with secondary-aged children or young people in education, youth work, mentoring, or care settings
  • Confidence supporting students with behavioural, social, emotional, or additional learning needs
  • Excellent communication and behaviour management skills
  • A calm, patient, and resilient approach to supporting learners
  • Ability to build positive, professional relationships and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • A genuine passion for helping young people overcome barriers to education and achieve positive outcomes

To Work with GSL Education, You Must:

  • Have the right to work in the UK
  • Provide an up-to-date CV with relevant reference information covering the last 2 years
  • Have recent experience working with children or young people in an educational or support setting
  • Hold an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or be willing to apply for one
