Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Rotherham
Pay Rate: £460 - £600 per week (depending on experience)
Start Date: Immediate
Contract: Full-time/ Part-time, Day-to-day/ Long-term

GSL Education South Yorkshire Branch are seeking compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistants to work in schools across Rotherham. This rewarding opportunity is ideal for individuals who can provide consistent encouragement, emotional support, and practical guidance to pupils facing social, emotional, and mental health challenges. Working alongside teachers and pastoral teams, you will help create a structured environment where pupils feel safe, respected, and ready to learn.
The SEMH Teaching Assistant supports students in managing emotional and behavioural challenges, promotes positive engagement with learning, and encourages personal growth through tailored support and effective relationship building.
SEMH Teaching Assistant Responsibilities:
- Deliver one-to-one and small-group interventions that support pupils' emotional wellbeing
- Build trusting relationships that encourage confidence, resilience, and self-esteem
- Use restorative and trauma-informed approaches to manage challenging behaviour
- Assist pupils in developing emotional regulation, communication, and social interaction skills
- Support transitions between lessons and other school activities to reduce anxiety and promote routine
- Work closely with teaching staff to review support strategies and celebrate pupil progress
SEMH Teaching Assistant Requirements:
- Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH needs, SEND, or challenging behaviour is desirable
- Understanding of trauma-informed practice and positive behaviour support strategies
- Calm, empathetic, and resilient approach in challenging situations
- Ability to establish professional boundaries while building positive relationships
- Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply)
