SEMH Support Assistant – Alternative Provision 

Location: Hull
Salary: £93 – £110 per day (depending on experience)
Start Date: September 2026
Contract Type: Full-time

GSL Education Hull are currently seeking a passionate, resilient and dedicated SEMH Support Assistant to join a specialist school in Hull and The East Riding of Yorkshire.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and wants to make a genuine difference to the lives of students who may experience barriers to learning.

As an SEMH Support Assistant, you will work closely with students to help them manage their emotions, develop positive behaviours and engage successfully with their education. You will provide consistent support, build trusting relationships and help create a calm, safe and positive learning environment.

Previous experience in education, youth work, care, sports coaching, residential support, mentoring, mental health support or behaviour management would be highly desirable.

The Role

As an SEMH Support Assistant, you will:

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support to students with SEMH needs.

  • Support students with emotional regulation and managing their behaviour.

  • Build positive, trusting and professional relationships with pupils.

  • Encourage students to engage with learning and school routines.

  • Support the implementation of individual support and behaviour plans.

  • Use positive reinforcement to encourage positive choices and behaviours.

  • Work closely with teachers, pastoral staff and external professionals.

  • Respond calmly and appropriately to challenging situations.

  • Support students in developing confidence, resilience and independence.

  • Promote a safe, inclusive and supportive school environment.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a Behaviour Support Assistant who:

  • Has experience working with children or young people.

  • Has a genuine passion for supporting students with SEMH needs.

  • Is patient, calm, resilient and consistent.

  • Can build strong and positive relationships with young people.

  • Has the confidence to support students experiencing emotional and behavioural challenges.

  • Is able to remain calm under pressure.

  • Has a positive, nurturing and non-judgemental approach.

  • Is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
