Functional Skills Maths Teacher (SEMH)

Location: Southend
Salary: £120 - £300 per day
Contract Type: Full-time

Are you a passionate Functional Skills Maths Teacher looking to make a real difference in the lives of young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs? GSL Education are seeking an enthusiastic and resilient teacher to join a specialist SEMH setting in Southend.

As a Functional Skills Maths Teacher, you will deliver engaging, practical and differentiated Maths lessons that build confidence, develop essential numeracy skills and prepare students for life beyond education. Working alongside experienced pastoral teams, SEN professionals and support staff, you will create a safe, structured and nurturing learning environment where every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver engaging Functional Skills Maths lessons tailored to students with SEMH, Autism, ADHD and additional learning needs.
  • Differentiate learning to meet a wide range of abilities and EHCP outcomes.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships that promote confidence, engagement and emotional wellbeing.
  • Use trauma-informed, restorative and de-escalation approaches to support positive behaviour.
  • Assess, monitor and track student progress, adapting teaching strategies to maximise achievement.
  • Work collaboratively with SENCOs, pastoral teams, therapists and support staff to provide holistic support.
  • Prepare students for Functional Skills Maths qualifications, promoting independence and employability skills.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • QTS, PGCE, QTLS or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
  • Experience teaching Maths or Functional Skills Maths at KS3, KS4 or Post-16.
  • Experience working within SEMH, SEND, Alternative Provision or specialist education is desirable.
  • Strong classroom and behaviour management skills.
  • A nurturing, resilient and student-centred approach to teaching.
  • A genuine passion for improving outcomes for vulnerable young people.
