Job Title: SEMH Classroom Support Staff (Primary)
Location: Barnsley
Salary: £460 - £600 per week (depending on experience and qualifications)
Contract Type: Long-term / Temporary, Full-time / Part-time
Start Date: September 2026
Are you passionate about supporting primary-aged children with social, emotional and mental health needs? A welcoming primary school in Barnsley is looking for a caring and resilient SEMH Support Staff member to join their team from September 2026.
About the Role:
As a SEMH Support Staff (Primary), you will work closely with pupils who need additional support to engage with learning, manage their emotions and develop positive relationships within the classroom. Working alongside teachers and pastoral staff, you will help create a calm, structured environment where children feel supported and encouraged to achieve their potential.

Responsibilities:

Provide one-to-one and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs.

Encourage positive behaviour and emotional regulation throughout the school day.

Support teachers in delivering engaging classroom activities.

Build trusting relationships with pupils to improve confidence and participation.

Help maintain a safe, calm and structured learning environment.

Record observations and share relevant updates with teaching and pastoral staff.
Requirements:

Previous experience working with children or young people, particularly those with SEMH needs, is desirable.

Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

A patient, calm and resilient approach.

Ability to remain positive in challenging situations.

Confidence working collaboratively with school staff and families where appropriate.

A genuine commitment to supporting children's wellbeing and educational progress.

Have the right to work in the UK.

Have an up-to-date CV with two relevant references from within the last two years.

Have an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service or be willing to apply for one through GSL Education.
Please be advised that this role requires a strong knowledge and understanding of safeguarding and child protection and that successful applicants must satisfy all background safer recruitment checks including providing an enhanced DBS certificate registered on the update service, or completing an application for a new check.
