GSL are seeking enthusiastic Learning Mentors to support students in a specialist SEN school setting with identified learning needs, including SEN (Special Educational Needs), SEMH (Social, Emotional & Mental Health), ASD, ADHD and complex learning needs. This role is based in a supportive SEN school environment and involves working with students on a 1:1 and small group basis across a range of age and ability levels.

You will work alongside experienced teachers, SENCOs, pastoral teams and support staff to help students access learning, develop confidence, improve emotional regulation, and overcome barriers to education and engagement.

  • Providing 1:1 mentoring and small group support to pupils with additional needs

  • Supporting in-class learning across a range of subjects
  • Delivering targeted interventions focused on wellbeing, resilience, communication and social skills

As a Learning Mentor, you will play a key role in supporting students with additional needs. You will work closely with class teachers, SENCOs, pastoral staff, behaviour leads and external agencies to provide consistent, structured and nurturing support that enables students to engage positively with education.

Learning Mentor – SEN School – Education and Training – Colchester

Position: Learning Mentor (1:1 / Small Group)

Location: Colchester

Salary Scale: £92.59–£120 per day (depending on experience)

Contract Type: Full-time

Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 and small group mentoring support to students with SEN and SEMH needs
  • Support pupils with emotional regulation, behaviour, engagement and confidence building
  • Help students overcome barriers to learning including attendance, anxiety, trauma and social difficulties
  • Support access to a highly differentiated curriculum across a range of subjects
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, pastoral teams and external professionals
  • Promote positive behaviour, resilience, self-esteem and independence
  • Support de-escalation strategies and restorative approaches where required
  • Monitor student progress and provide feedback to staff
  • Support students during lessons, transitions and unstructured times
  • Contribute to a safe, inclusive, nurturing and trauma-informed learning environment

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with children and young people
  • Patience, empathy, resilience and consistency
  • A genuine interest in supporting young people with SEN, SEMH and behavioural needs
  • Proactive, flexible and team-focused approach
  • Experience in education, youth work, care, coaching or support roles is desirable but not essential
