GSL Education are currently recruiting for a dedicated and experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to work within a post-16 educational setting in York.

This is a highly rewarding opportunity to support young people with high needs and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), helping them to fully engage in learning, develop independence, and enjoy a positive and inclusive educational experience. The successful candidate will work closely with teaching staff and support teams to provide tailored, person-centred assistance.

About the Role:

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will provide both individual and small-group support to learners with a range of complex needs. You will help students access their learning in a way that meets their specific requirements, promoting confidence, independence, and progression.

You will be working with learners who may have Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, Dyslexia, Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Speech, Language and Communication Needs, Dyspraxia, and Moderate to Severe Learning Difficulties.

Key Responsibilities of the SEN Teaching Assistant:

  • Provide tailored 1:1 and small-group support to learners with additional needs
  • Support students in accessing curriculum activities and learning materials
  • Implement personalised learning and support strategies
  • Encourage independence, confidence, and engagement in learning
  • Assist with communication and social interaction development
  • Support learners with emotional regulation and behaviour where required
  • Work closely with teaching staff and support teams to deliver consistent support
  • Monitor progress and contribute to learner development records
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment

As the Ideal SEN Teaching Assistant, You Should Have:

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEND in education or support settings
  • Understanding of Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, SEMH, Speech and Language needs, Dyspraxia, and learning difficulties
  • A patient, empathetic, and supportive approach
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build positive and trusting relationships with learners
  • Good behaviour support and de-escalation skills
  • A commitment to inclusion and supporting learner achievement
  • Relevant qualifications in support work or education would be advantageous but not essential

To Work with GSL Education, You Must:

  • Have the right to work in the UK
  • Provide an up-to-date CV with relevant reference information covering the last 2 years
  • Have recent experience working with young people or within an educational setting
  • Hold an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or be willing to apply for one
