Job Title: SEND Teaching Assistant
Location: York, North Yorkshire
Contract: Part Time, Full Time, Term Time Only
Start Date: September 2026 or sooner
Salary: £92 - £115 per day

GSL Education are currently hiring an experienced and passionate SEND Teaching Assistant to work within a specialist post-16 educational setting in York. This opportunity is based in a supportive learning environment where students with high needs are encouraged to develop independence, confidence, and the skills required for their future progression.
As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will provide tailored learning support to students with a range of additional needs, helping them to fully access their education and enjoy an inclusive learning experience. You will work closely with teaching staff and support teams to deliver individualised support strategies that enable students to progress academically, socially, and emotionally.
Main Responsibilities as a SEND Teaching Assistant:
- Provide one-to-one and small group support for students with high needs and SEND.
- Support learners in accessing curriculum content in a way that meets their individual needs.
- Assist with the implementation of individual education plans and targeted learning strategies.
- Promote independence, confidence, and positive engagement in learning.
- Support students with a range of needs including Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, SEMH, Speech, Language and Communication Needs, Dyspraxia, and Moderate to Severe Learning Difficulties.
- Adapt learning materials and approaches under the guidance of teaching staff.
- Encourage positive behaviour, emotional regulation, and social interaction.
- Work collaboratively with tutors, support staff, and external professionals.
- Monitor and feedback on student progress, engagement, and wellbeing.
- Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment at all times.
SEND Teaching Assistant Minimum Requirements:
- Experience working with children or young people with SEND or high needs in an educational setting is essential.
- Strong understanding of a range of additional needs including Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, SEMH, SLCN, Dyspraxia, and learning difficulties.
- Ability to provide patient, empathetic, and consistent support to learners.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- A proactive and flexible approach to supporting individual learning needs.
- A genuine passion for inclusive education and supporting learner progression.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.
- An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service (or willingness to apply for one).
