SEMH Teaching Assistant

Location: Stockton-on-Tees
Salary: £90–£120 per day (dependent on experience)
Start Date: September 2026
Contract Type: Full-Time / Flexible

A supportive and inclusive school in Stockton-on-Tees is seeking a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team. This SEMH Teaching Assistant role is ideal for someone passionate about supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and helping them overcome barriers to learning.

The successful SEMH Teaching Assistant will work closely with teachers, pastoral teams and SEN staff to provide tailored support to pupils. As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play a key role in promoting positive behaviour, emotional wellbeing and engagement in education.

Key Responsibilities of the SEMH Teaching Assistant:

  • Providing 1:1 and small group support to pupils with SEMH needs.

  • Building positive and professional relationships with pupils.

  • Supporting pupils with emotional regulation and social development.

  • Promoting positive behaviour and engagement in learning.

  • Using de-escalation techniques and behaviour management strategies.

  • Supporting pupils who may display behaviours that are challenging.

  • Working alongside teachers and pastoral teams to implement support plans.

  • Helping to create a safe, nurturing and inclusive learning environment.

The Ideal SEMH Teaching Assistant Will:

  • Have previous experience working with children or young people.

  • Have experience supporting pupils with SEMH needs or behaviours that are challenging.

  • Be patient, resilient and adaptable in approach.

  • Have strong communication and relationship-building skills.

  • Hold Team Teach training or be willing to undertake relevant training (desirable).

  • Hold an enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or be willing to apply).

  • Have a fully checkable work history.
