GSL Education are currently seeking a compassionate Autism Support Assistant to work within a welcoming secondary school setting in North Yorkshire. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is committed to supporting students with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and helping them achieve their academic, social, and personal goals.

As an Autism Support Assistant, you will work closely with students on a one-to-one basis and in small groups, providing tailored support that enables them to access learning, develop positive relationships, and feel confident within the school environment. You will collaborate with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and families to ensure students receive the support they need to succeed.

Main Responsibilities as an Autism Support Assistant:

  • Provide dedicated support to students with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) across a range of subjects and activities.
  • Assist students in accessing the curriculum by adapting support to meet their individual needs.
  • Promote communication, social interaction, and emotional regulation skills.
  • Support pupils in developing independence, confidence, and self-esteem.
  • Implement strategies recommended by SEND professionals and school staff.
  • Work closely with teachers to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
  • Assist with transitions between lessons, activities, and different areas of the school.
  • Monitor and record student progress, engagement, and wellbeing.
  • Encourage positive behaviour and support students in managing sensory or emotional challenges.
  • Uphold safeguarding procedures and contribute to the overall welfare of students.

Autism Support Assistant Minimum Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with autism, SEND, or additional learning needs is desirable.
  • A good understanding of Autism Spectrum Condition and the challenges some students may face within education.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
  • A patient, calm, and adaptable approach to supporting young people.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow guidance from teaching and SEND staff.
  • A genuine passion for supporting students with additional needs to reach their full potential.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service (or willingness to apply for one).
