Job Title: Learning Mentor
Location: York, North Yorkshire
Contract: Part time, Full Time, Term Time Only
Start Date: September 2026 or sooner
Salary: £92 – £115 per day

GSL Education are currently hiring dedicated and enthusiastic Learning Mentors to work in secondary schools across York and the surrounding areas. Whether you are looking for short-term roles, long-term placements, or a pathway into education, we can help you find an opportunity that matches your skills and career aspirations.
As a Learning Mentor, you will work closely with students who may require additional support with their learning, behaviour, attendance, or emotional wellbeing. You will play a key role in building positive relationships, promoting engagement, and helping students develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed both in school and in their wider lives.
Main Responsibilities as a Learning Mentor:
- Provide one-to-one and small group support to students who require additional help.
- Build strong, positive relationships to support students’ academic, social, and emotional development.
- Help students overcome barriers to learning and improve engagement in education.
- Support the implementation of behaviour support plans, mentoring programmes, and intervention strategies.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral teams, and external agencies to support student progress.
- Encourage positive behaviour, resilience, self-esteem, and independence.
- Monitor and record student progress, attendance, and wellbeing where required.
- Support students in lessons and around the school environment as appropriate.
- Promote safeguarding, inclusion, and equal opportunities for all learners.
Learning Mentor Minimum Requirements:
- Experience working with children or young people in an educational, pastoral, youth work, or support role is desirable.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- A calm, patient, and empathetic approach when working with young people.
- Ability to motivate and engage students from a range of backgrounds.
- Good organisational and record-keeping skills.
- A proactive approach to supporting behaviour and learning needs.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
- An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service (or willingness to apply for one).
