GSL Education are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) Teaching Assistant to join a specialist educational setting in Scarborough from September 2026.

This rewarding role involves supporting children and young people who experience speech, language and communication difficulties, helping them to access learning, develop social skills, and achieve their full potential in a nurturing and supportive environment.

About the Role

As a Speech, Language and Communication Needs Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers, therapists, and other support staff to deliver targeted interventions and classroom support. You will help pupils develop their communication skills, build confidence, and engage positively with their education.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting pupils with speech, language and communication needs on a 1:1 and small-group basis
  • Assisting with communication-focused interventions and learning activities
  • Encouraging positive social interaction and emotional development
  • Supporting pupils with additional needs, including autism and social, emotional and mental health needs
  • Working collaboratively with teaching staff and external professionals
  • Monitoring and recording pupil progress where required

About the Ideal Candidate

  • Has experience working with children or young people with additional needs
  • Has a genuine passion for supporting pupils with communication difficulties
  • Demonstrates patience, empathy, and resilience
  • Possesses strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Is able to build positive and trusting relationships with pupils and staff
  • Holds a relevant qualification in education, psychology, speech and language, health and social care, or a related field (desirable)
