Job Title: SEN Teaching Assistant

Contract: Full Time, Term Time Only
Start Date: September 2026 or Sooner
Salary: £92 – £115 per day

GSL Education are currently recruiting for a compassionate and dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to undertake short-term cover and long-term placements within schools in York and the surrounding areas.
This is a rewarding opportunity for individuals who are passionate about supporting children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN). The successful candidate will work closely with teachers and support staff to help learners access education, build confidence, and achieve their full potential.
About the Role:
As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will provide tailored support to students with a range of additional needs, including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, speech and language difficulties, learning disabilities, SEMH needs, and other barriers to learning. You will work on a one-to-one basis and with small groups, helping to create a positive and inclusive learning experience for every student.
Key Responsibilities of the SEN Teaching Assistant:
- Provide individual and small-group support to students with SEN
- Assist learners in accessing the curriculum and participating fully in lessons
- Implement strategies and support plans tailored to individual student needs
- Promote positive behaviour, emotional wellbeing, and engagement with learning
- Support students with communication, social interaction, and independence skills
- Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and other professionals to support learner outcomes
- Monitor progress and provide feedback on student development
- Contribute to a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment
- Support personal care needs where required and appropriate
As the Ideal SEN Teaching Assistant, You Should Have:
- Previous experience working with children or young people with SEN, either in education, care, or support settings
- A patient, empathetic, and adaptable approach
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to build positive and trusting relationships with learners
- Understanding of a range of special educational needs and support strategies
- Good behaviour management and problem-solving skills
- Commitment to inclusion, safeguarding, and promoting student wellbeing
- Relevant qualifications or training would be advantageous but are not essential
To Work with GSL Education, You Must:
- Have the right to work in the UK
- Provide an up-to-date CV with relevant reference information covering the last 2 years
- Have recent experience working with children or young people
- Hold an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or be willing to apply for one
