Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Scarborough, North Yorkshire
Contract: Part-Time, Term Time only
Start Date: September 2026 or sooner
Salary: £92-£115 Per day

GSL Education are currently looking for dedicated and experienced SEMH Teaching Assistants to work in specialist settings across Scarborough and the surrounding areas. As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students who may present with challenging or complex behavioural needs. You will work closely with teaching staff and pastoral teams to provide consistent support, promote positive behaviour strategies, and help students develop confidence, emotional regulation, and engagement with learning.
Main Responsibilities as an SEMH Teaching Assistant:
- Provide tailored support to students with SEMH needs and complex behavioural challenges.
- Support pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups to help them access learning effectively.
- Assist in implementing behaviour support plans and personalised learning strategies.
- Help de-escalate challenging situations using positive behaviour management techniques.
- Build trusting and supportive relationships with students to encourage engagement and progress.
- Support the class teacher in delivering adapted learning activities and interventions.
- Promote emotional wellbeing, resilience, and positive social interactions.
- Monitor and report on student progress, behaviour, and wellbeing where required.
- Contribute to creating a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment.
- Uphold safeguarding procedures and promote the welfare of all learners at all times.
SEMH Teaching Assistant Minimum Requirements:
- Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour is highly desirable.
- A calm, patient, and resilient approach to supporting vulnerable learners.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team within a specialist setting.
- Understanding of behaviour management strategies and emotional regulation techniques.
- A genuine passion for supporting young people to overcome barriers to learning.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
- An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service (or willingness to apply for one).
