Are you a resilient, compassionate, and proactive SEMH Teaching Assistant looking to make a real difference in the lives of young people with additional needs and behavioural challenges?

GSL Education are seeking a compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to work within local educational settings in Scarborough and the surrounding areas. This is a highly rewarding opportunity to support students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them to overcome barriers to learning and achieve their full potential.

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teaching staff and pastoral teams to provide tailored support, promote positive behaviour, and help create a safe, structured, and nurturing learning environment.

SEMH Teaching Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Support students with SEMH needs and associated behavioural challenges in and out of the classroom
  • Assist teachers in delivering engaging and accessible learning activities
  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to help students regulate emotions and stay engaged in learning
  • Implement behaviour support strategies consistently and effectively
  • Encourage positive behaviour, resilience, and emotional wellbeing
  • Help create a calm, structured, and safe learning environment
  • Support students in developing social skills, confidence, and independence
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff, and external agencies where required

SEMH Teaching Assistant Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people, ideally with SEMH or behavioural needs
  • A calm, patient, and resilient approach to challenging situations
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to use initiative and remain consistent in approach
  • A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable learners and improving outcomes
  • Experience in behaviour support is highly desirable
  • An up-to-date CV covering the last ten years (with any gaps explained)
  • An enhanced DBS certificate registered on the update service, or willingness to apply
