English Tutor
Location: York, North Yorkshire
Contract: Part Time, Term Time Only
Start Date: September 2026 or sooner
Salary: £25 – £35 per hour

GSL Education are currently recruiting for a committed and skilled English Tutor to undertake short-term cover and long-term placements within a secondary school setting in York and the surrounding areas.
This role is based within a specialist Horizons (Inclusion Provision) supporting KS3 and KS4 learners who require additional guidance to re-engage with English learning, build confidence, and make sustained academic progress.
About the Role:
As an English Tutor within the Horizons (Inclusion Provision), you will deliver targeted English intervention sessions to small groups and individual learners across Key Stages 3 and 4. You will focus on building foundational literacy skills, improving confidence, and supporting students to achieve meaningful progress in line with their individual learning needs.
Key Responsibilities of the English Tutor:
- Deliver high-quality, tailored English support to KS3 and KS4 learners within an inclusion setting
- Plan and adapt learning activities to meet individual student needs and abilities
- Support development of reading, writing, comprehension, and communication skills
- Build positive relationships to encourage engagement and motivation in learning
- Track and monitor student progress, providing clear and constructive feedback
- Work closely with teaching staff and pastoral teams to support learner outcomes
- Implement strategies to support behaviour, engagement, and emotional regulation where required
- Contribute to creating a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment
As the Ideal English Tutor, You Should Have:
- Experience teaching or tutoring English in a school or educational setting
- Strong knowledge of the KS3 and KS4 English curriculum
- Ability to differentiate learning to meet a range of abilities and needs
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- A patient, empathetic, and resilient approach to supporting learners
- Strong behaviour management and classroom support skills
- A genuine passion for improving literacy and learner confidence
To Work with GSL Education, You Must:
- Have the right to work in the UK
- Provide an up-to-date CV with relevant reference information covering the last 2 years
- Have recent experience working with young people in an educational setting
- Hold an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or be willing to apply for one
