Autism Teaching Assistant
Location: Scarborough, North Yorkshire
Contract: Full Time, Term Time Only

Start Date: September 2026 or sooner
Salary: £92 – £115 per day

GSL Education is currently recruiting for a compassionate and proactive Autism Teaching Assistant to support students at a special needs school in Scarborough.

This is a rewarding opportunity to support children and young people with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and additional learning needs within a specialist educational environment focused on personalised support, communication, wellbeing, and independence.

The school is a specialist provision supporting students with a range of additional needs, including autism, communication difficulties, sensory needs, and SEMH challenges. Staff work closely together to provide tailored support, positive behaviour strategies, and therapeutic approaches to ensure every student can thrive both socially and emotionally.

As an Autism Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for students with autism and additional needs.
  • Support students with communication, emotional regulation, sensory needs, and engagement within lessons.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships to help students feel safe, supported, and confident in school.
  • Adapt learning activities and classroom approaches to meet individual student needs.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SEN staff, therapists, and pastoral teams to support student progress.
  • Promote independence, social interaction, and positive behaviour throughout the school day.
  • Support students during lessons, transitions, breaktimes, and enrichment activities where required.

The Ideal Teaching Assistant Will Have:

  • Experience supporting children or young people with autism, SEN, SEMH, or additional needs.
  • A calm, patient, and empathetic approach.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • The ability to adapt to different learning and behavioural needs.
  • A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people.

Graduates in Psychology, Education, Health & Social Care, Speech & Language, Sports Coaching, or related fields are encouraged to apply, alongside experienced Teaching Assistants and support workers.
