Psychology Graduate Teaching Assistant
Location: York, North Yorkshire
Start Date: ASAP
Contract: Full Time, Monday to Friday, Term Time Only
Daily Rate: £92 – £115 per day

GSL Education are currently recruiting a Psychology Graduate Teaching Assistant to support students within a specialist educational setting in York. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate looking to gain hands-on experience working with young people with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, particularly for those considering careers in educational psychology, clinical psychology, teaching, or youth work.

About the School

This setting is a well-established alternative provision supporting students aged 5–16 who are unable to access mainstream education due to behavioural, emotional, or social needs. The school offers a structured and nurturing environment, with a strong focus on restorative practice, emotional regulation, and re-engagement with education. Staff work closely together to provide consistent support and create positive outcomes for all learners.

The Role

As a Psychology Graduate Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to students with SEMH needs.
  • Assist in managing behaviour using de-escalation and restorative approaches.
  • Support students in understanding and regulating their emotions.
  • Help deliver tailored learning activities alongside the class teacher.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with students who may be disengaged from education.
  • Monitor and record student progress and behaviour.
  • Support the overall wellbeing and development of pupils.

  • A degree in Psychology or a related field.
  • A genuine interest in supporting children with SEMH needs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A calm, patient and resilient approach.
  • The ability to build rapport with challenging or vulnerable young people.
  • A willingness to learn and develop within a school setting.
  • Previous experience is beneficial but not essential – your attitude and willingness to support students is key.
