SEN Teaching Assistant – Supporting Students Who Communicate via Behaviours That Challenge
Location: Newcastle upon Tyne and surrounding areas including Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Gateshead, Redcar and Ashington
Salary: £85–£120 per day (dependent on experience)
Start Date: Immediate
Contract Type: Full-Time / Flexible
Schools across Newcastle upon Tyne and surrounding areas including Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Gateshead, Redcar and Ashington are seeking dedicated SEN Teaching Assistants to support pupils with additional needs, including students who communicate via behaviours that challenge. This SEN Teaching Assistant role is ideal for someone patient, resilient, and committed to helping pupils access education through structured and consistent support.
The successful SEN Teaching Assistant will work closely with teaching staff to provide tailored classroom support, build positive relationships, and help pupils regulate emotions and engage in learning. This SEN Teaching Assistant opportunity offers the chance to make a meaningful difference across a range of specialist and mainstream school settings.
Key Responsibilities of the SEN Teaching Assistant Role:
- Providing classroom support on a 1:1 and small group basis
- Supporting students who communicate via behaviours that challenge
- Promoting emotional regulation and positive engagement in learning
- Implementing behaviour support strategies consistently
- Working closely with teachers and SEN staff to meet individual needs
- Maintaining a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment
The Ideal SEN Teaching Assistant Will:
- Have experience supporting children or young people with additional needs
- Be confident managing behaviours that challenge
- Demonstrate patience, resilience, and strong communication skills
- Be calm, proactive, and consistent in approach
- Hold an enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or be willing to apply)
- Have a fully checkable work history
