Speech & Language Support Assistant
Location: Scarborough, North Yorkshire
Start Date: ASAP / Easter 2026
Contract: Full-Time
Salary: £92 – £110 per day (depending on experience)
Due to continued expansion and the opening of additional classes, a specialist provision in Scarborough is seeking a Speech & Language Support Assistant to join their dedicated team. This role is ideal for someone passionate about supporting pupils with communication needs, particularly those with Autism (ASC) and Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).
The Role:
- Provide targeted speech and language support to pupils on a 1:1 and small group basis.
- Use and implement communication strategies including PECS and Makaton.
- Support pupils in developing functional communication, interaction, and social skills.
- Work alongside teachers, SEN staff, and external therapists to deliver individual communication plans.
- Use visual supports, structured routines, and sensory approaches to enhance engagement.
- Monitor and report on pupil progress and communication development.
The Ideal Speech & Language Support Assistant Will:
- Have experience using PECS and/or Makaton (or a strong willingness to train).
- Have experience supporting children or young people with ASC and SLCN.
- Be patient, nurturing, and consistent in their approach.
- Have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Be able to build trusting relationships with pupils who may have limited verbal communication.
We also welcome applicants with transferable experience from sectors such as:
- Care or support work
- Early years settings
- Speech and language support roles
- Psychology or education-related backgrounds
