Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant (SEMH TA)
Location: Newcastle
Salary: £90 – £115 per day (depending on experience)
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Type: Day-to-day / Long Term, Full-time / Part-time

GSL Education are seeking dedicated and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistants to work in schools across Newcastle.
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant (SEMH TA), you will work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to support pupils who require additional emotional and behavioural support, helping them to stay engaged in learning and develop positive coping strategies.
Responsibilities of an SEMH Teaching Assistant:
- Provide one-to-one and small group support to students with SEMH needs
- Assist teachers in managing classroom behaviour and promoting positive learning environments
- Support pupils in developing social skills, emotional regulation, and confidence
- Help implement behaviour support strategies and individual support plans
- Encourage positive behaviour and support students in managing challenging situations
- Build strong, supportive relationships with students to help improve engagement in learning
- Monitor and record student progress and behaviour, reporting updates to teachers or pastoral staff
- Assist in creating a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment
To be an SEMH Teaching Assistant, what you should have:
- Previous experience supporting young people with SEMH, behavioural needs, or additional learning needs is desirable
- A qualification in SEN, Psychology, Education etc. or a similar field is desirable.
- CACHE Level 2/3 or NVQ Level 2/3 in Teaching Assistant or childcare is desirable but not mandatory.
- Strong behaviour management and communication skills
- A calm, patient, and resilient approach when working with students
- A genuine passion for supporting young people’s wellbeing and development
- An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
