Job description

Primary Teacher
Location:
York, North Yorkshire

Start Date: April 2026
Contract: Full-Time | 1-Year Maternity Cover
Salary: MPS/UPS

Are you a Primary Teacher looking for a role where you can make a genuine difference, teach in small classes, and build meaningful relationships with pupils?

GSL Education is working in partnership with a well-regarded specialist provision in York to appoint a Key Stage 1 or Lower Key Stage 2 Teacher for a maternity cover starting in April 2026.

This is not a typical Year 5/6 class. You will teach a class of 6 pupils who are working at Key Stage 1 and Lower Key Stage 2 levels within a highly supportive SEMH setting.

Why This Role Is Different

  • Class size of 6 pupils
  • High staff-to-pupil ratios
  • Strong therapeutic and pastoral support
  • Flexibility to adapt and personalise the curriculum
  • A focus on emotional development as well as academic progress

This specialist provision supports pupils aged 5–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs who find mainstream settings challenging.

The primary phase delivers:

  • Highly personalised learning
  • Adapted National Curriculum
  • Strong emphasis on literacy, phonics and core skills
  • Explicit teaching of emotional regulation and social development
  • A holistic approach including PSHCE and wellbeing

Teachers are trusted to use their professional judgement to deliver meaningful differentiation and build strong, consistent relationships with pupils.

The Ideal Primary Teacher Will Have:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Experience teaching within a primary setting
  • Experience supporting pupils with SEMH, SEND or behavioural needs
  • Strong behaviour management skills rooted in relationship-building
  • Confidence delivering highly differentiated lessons
  • A strong understanding of safeguarding and pupil wellbeing

This role would suit a teacher who:

  • Wants to work with smaller groups
  • Values depth of learning over pace
  • Is passionate about inclusive, trauma-informed practice
  • Wants to see measurable impact in both confidence and attainment

What You Can Expect:

  • Supportive and experienced leadership team
  • Autonomy within your classroom
  • A rewarding and purposeful teaching environment
  • Competitive MPS/UPS pay paid to scale from day 1
  • Ongoing support from a dedicated GSL consultant

If you are ready to teach in a setting where every step of progress matters, we would love to hear from you.
