Teaching Assistant
Location: York, North Yorkshire
Start Date: April 2026 or sooner
Salary: £90 – £110 per day
Contract: Full Time, Term Time Only

GSL Education is recruiting passionate and resilient support staff to work full-time in a specialist SEMH provision in York. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals with experience in education, coaching, behaviour support or mental health who are looking to make a meaningful impact on young people’s lives.
About the School
This specialist provision supports pupils aged 5–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs who have found mainstream education challenging. The school provides a highly structured, nurturing environment with small class sizes, strong pastoral support and a focus on emotional regulation, positive relationships and personalised learning pathways. Staff work collaboratively to re-engage pupils with education and help them develop confidence, resilience and life skills.
As a Teaching Assistant you will:
- Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with SEMH needs
- Support emotional regulation and positive behaviour strategies
- Build strong, consistent relationships with pupils
- Assist teachers in delivering tailored academic and vocational learning
- Support structured sports, enrichment and outdoor learning activities
- Promote wellbeing, confidence and personal development
As the Ideal Candidate, you should be a:
- Teaching Assistant with SEMH or SEN experience
- Sports Coach confident in using physical activity to engage young people
- Behaviour Support Worker with de-escalation and positive behaviour training
- Mental Health Support Worker with experience supporting vulnerable young people
- Individual who is calm, resilient, consistent and relationship-focused
Experience working with SEMH, ASC, ADHD, trauma-informed practice or challenging behaviour is highly desirable.
