Location: York, North Yorkshire
Start Date: March 2026
Contract: Full Time, Temporary

GSL Education is seeking a qualified Teacher to work with Key Stage 4 learners within an alternative provision in York. This is a full time role, on a temporary basis, delivering GCSE and Functional Skills Maths. If you are a qualified Maths Teacher with experience teaching young people with additional needs, or an SEN Teacher who is confident with the Maths curriculum, we would love to hear from you.
About the School
The school provides education for children and young people aged 4 to 16 years, with a range of additional needs. Needs include, but are not limited to social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), autism (ASC), moderate learning difficulties (MLD) and ADHD.
The school aims to provide a supportive, nurturing environment where pupils can build confidence, resilience, and academic and life skills to either return to mainstream education or transition into other post-16 opportunities.
Small class sizes and high staff-to-pupil ratios enable personalised learning and consistent support. The school’s curriculum combines academic achievement, vocational pathways and robust pastoral development, including PSHCE, to prepare pupils for future success.
As an SEN Teacher with a focus on delivering Maths, you will:
- Act as Key Worker for 6 KS4 pupils with ASC, building trusted, consistent relationships that support both academic progress and emotional wellbeing.
- Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated Maths lessons tailored to individual needs, learning profiles and EHCP outcomes.
- Teach PSHCE to support pupils’ personal development, independence, social understanding and preparation for adulthood.
- Use a structured, informed approach to create a calm, predictable and inclusive learning environment.
- Develop and implement personalised support strategies, including regulation and communication approaches.
- Support pupils in developing resilience, self-advocacy and essential life skills alongside academic achievement.
As the Ideal SEN or Maths Teacher, you should have:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification.
- Experience teaching Maths at KS4, with a strong understanding of differentiation and adaptive teaching.
- Experience working with pupils with ASC and/or Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
- A secure understanding of EHCPs and how to translate outcomes into effective classroom practice.
- The ability to build positive, trusting relationships with pupils who may have experienced barriers to learning.
- Strong behaviour support skills, using relational and trauma-informed approaches where appropriate.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with families and multi-agency professionals.
- A calm, resilient and reflective approach, with high expectations for both learning and conduct.
- A commitment to inclusive practice and improving outcomes for vulnerable learners.
To apply for the position of SEN Teacher, please contact Kerry Fowler at GSL Education as soon as possible, and submit an up-to-date CV via the application link.
