SEMH Teaching Assistant

Start Date: As soon as possible; February 2026/March 2026
Salary: £23124 – £27258 per annum*

GSL Education is recruiting a full-time SEMH Teaching Assistant to support primary-aged pupils within a nurturing and inclusive school in York. This is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful difference for children with social, emotional, and mental health needs.

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Support pupils with emotional regulation, self-esteem, and social skills.
  • Implement personalised strategies and behaviour plans.
  • Encourage engagement with learning and the wider school community.
  • Work alongside teachers, SEN staff, and external professionals to meet pupils’ needs.
  • Promote a positive and safe learning environment.
  • Support pupils in developing resilience, confidence, and independence.

As the Ideal SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Have experience supporting children with SEMH, behavioural challenges, or other additional needs.
  • Be patient, resilient, and able to remain calm in challenging situations.
  • Understand positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies.
  • Work well both independently and as part of a team.
  • Have a child-centred approach and excellent communication skills.
  • Hold an enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or is willing to apply).
