SEN Teacher
Location: York, North Yorkshire
Start date: April 2026
Contract: Full-time, Maternity Cover
Salary: MPS/UPS
GSL Education is seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEN Teacher for a fixed term, maternity cover contract. This is within a Primary SEN provision in York, starting in April 2026. This role offers the opportunity to work with a small, well-established class in a highly supportive setting.
About the Role
The successful candidate will teach a small class of six pupils in Years 5 and 6, all of whom are working below age-related expectations and are functioning at low Key Stage 2 / Key Stage 1 levels. Pupils present with a range of needs including SEMH, Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), and Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD).
You will be supported by a consistent and experienced TA, who knows the pupils well and provides strong continuity and behavioural support. There will be a planned handover and transition period alongside the current class teacher prior to maternity leave.
Key Responsibilities as an SEN Teacher:
- Delivering engaging, differentiated learning tailored to individual pupil needs.
- Creating a structured, calm and nurturing classroom environment.
- Supporting pupils’ academic progress, emotional regulation and wellbeing.
- Working collaboratively with support staff and wider professionals.
- Implementing individual plans and adapting teaching to meet SEN needs.
- Maintaining high standards of safeguarding and pupil care.
The Ideal SEN Teacher Will:
- Hold QTS (or equivalent).
- Have experience working with pupils with SEN, particularly SEMH and ASC.
- Be confident teaching pupils working significantly below age-related expectations.
- Demonstrate strong behaviour support and relationship-building skills.
- Be flexible, reflective, and committed to inclusive education.
