Job description

Primary Teacher
Start Date:
End of April 2026

Contract: Full Time, Fixed-term Maternity Cover
Salary: MPS/UPS

GSL Education are seeking a dedicated, flexible, and compassionate Primary Teacher to work within a mixed Year 5/6 class at a well-established Alternative Provision in York. Whilst students are in Years 5 and 6, their learning levels are between Key Stage 1 and lower Key Stage 2, so the ability to scaffold and adapt lessons and resources is crucial.

This is a full-time role, offering the opportunity to make a meaningful difference within a specialist setting, supported by an experienced and established TA who knows the pupils and routines extremely well. A handover period will be provided to support a smooth transition.

About the Role

You will be responsible for planning and delivering engaging, accessible learning for a group of six pupils with a mix of SEMH, ASC, and Moderate Learning Difficulties. Although the pupils are of upper Key Stage 2 age, they are currently operating at lower KS2 / KS1 levels, and learning will be tailored accordingly.

The role requires a calm, nurturing, and structured approach, with a strong focus on consistency, relationships, and emotional regulation alongside academic learning.

About the School

The school is a specialist setting committed to providing a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where pupils can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. The school works closely as a team, placing strong emphasis on relationships, routine, and positive behaviour support. Staff are well supported, collaboration is valued, and pupil wellbeing sits at the heart of everything they do.

The Ideal Candidate Will:

  • Be a qualified Primary Teacher (QTS).
  • Have experience of teaching in SEN education.
  • Demonstrate understanding of SEMH, ASC and learning difficulties.
  • Be able to adapt curriculum content to meet individual needs.
  • Work effectively with support staff and wider professionals.
  • Bring patience, consistency, and a positive, reflective approach to the classroom.

Experience in specialist or alternative provision is desirable but not essential – we welcome applications from teachers with a genuine passion for inclusive education and supporting pupils with additional needs.

In Return, the School Offers:

  • A small class size with high levels of support.
  • A knowledgeable and consistent TA2 within the classroom.
  • A structured handover period before the maternity leave begins.
  • A collaborative and supportive staff team.
  • The opportunity to make a real impact in a specialist SEN setting.

If you are a committed primary teacher looking for a rewarding role from April 2026, we would love to hear from you.
