SEN Teaching Assistant
Location: York, North Yorkshire
Start Date: ASAP / February Start Available
Contract: Full Time, Term Time Only
Pay: £88 – £110 per day

GSL Education are working in partnership with a specialist provision in York to recruit a committed and compassionate Teaching Assistant to join their team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting children and young people with additional needs in a highly supportive and structured environment.

About the School

This specialist community provision supports students aged 4–16 with complex learning needs, including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), communication difficulties, and associated social, emotional, and behavioural needs. The school offers a calm, nurturing and highly personalised approach to learning, with small class sizes, strong pastoral support and a focus on emotional regulation, independence and life skills. Staff work closely as a multidisciplinary team to ensure every learner is supported to achieve their full potential.

The Role

As a Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teaching staff to support pupils both in and out of the classroom. You may provide 1:1 support or work with small groups, helping students to engage with learning, manage transitions and develop social and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting pupils with ASC and additional learning needs across KS1, KS2, KS3 and KS4
  • Providing 1:1 and small group support in lessons and intervention sessions
  • Supporting emotional regulation, behaviour and engagement using a trauma-informed approach
  • Assisting with differentiated learning activities and practical tasks
  • Working closely with teachers, SEN staff and external professionals
  • Promoting a safe, positive and inclusive learning environment

As the Ideal Teaching Assistant, you should have:

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEND (ASC experience desirable)
  • Calm, patient and resilient approach
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • A genuine passion for inclusive education and pupil wellbeing
  • Relevant qualifications (TA qualification, childcare, psychology or similar) desirable
  • Willingness to support personal development and independence skills
