SEN Teaching Assistant
Location: Scarborough, North Yorkshire
Start Date: ASAP / February Start Available
Contract: Full Time, Term Time Only
Pay: £88 – £110 per day

GSL Education are recruiting skilled and compassionate Teaching Assistants to support children and young people in a specialist SEND school in Scarborough. This setting caters for pupils aged 2–16 years with a wide range of complex needs, including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Social, Emotional & Mental Health needs (SEMH), moderate learning difficulties (MLD), and additional communication or developmental needs.

The Role

As a Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils with diverse additional needs, helping them access learning and achieve their personal and educational goals. You will work with teachers and multidisciplinary teams to deliver both planned and adaptive learning support.

Key Responsibilities as a Teaching Assistant:

  • Provide consistent 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with ASC, SEMH, MLD and complex needs.
  • Support pupils’ academic skills, communication, social interaction and emotional regulation.
  • Deliver personalised learning activities designed to build confidence, independence and functional skills.
  • Reinforce behaviour strategies, routines and positive engagement in the classroom and across this school day.
  • Assist with differentiated tasks, visual supports, sensory strategies and personalised resources.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils, families and colleagues to enhance progress.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCo, therapists and external professionals to meet each pupil’s targets.

As the Ideal Teaching Assistant, you should have:

  • Experience or interest in supporting children with SEND and additional needs.
  • Calm, patient and adaptable approach, with strong relational skills.
  • Confident supporting emotional regulation, de-escalation and behaviour strategies.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Relevant experience or training (e.g., TA qualification, childcare, psychology, youth work, therapy support) is desirable.
