SEMH Teaching Assistant

Location: York area
Salary: £88 – £110 per day
Contract: Full-Time
Start Date: January 2026

GSL Education are recruiting a supportive SEMH Teaching Assistant to work in a specialist Alternative Provision near York. This role is ideal for someone with experience supporting children with emotional and behavioural needs.

About the School

The provision provides a flexible, therapeutic learning environment for pupils who have struggled in mainstream settings due to social, emotional and mental health needs, behavioural challenges or entrenched absence. Staff work closely with learners to build trust, emotional regulation and re-engagement in education.

SEMH Teaching Assistant Responsibilities

• Support pupils with SEMH needs in 1:1 and small groups.
• Help deliver emotional regulation and behaviour support strategies.
• Assist with adapted learning activities and personalised plans.
• Work with teachers, pastoral leads and support services.

Requirements

• Experience supporting pupils with SEMH or complex behaviour.
• Knowledge of restorative approaches and de-escalation.
• Strong communication, empathy and resilience.
• Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to apply.
