Autism Teaching Assistant
Location: York
Salary: £88 – £110 per day
Contract: Full-Time
Start Date: 6 January 2026
GSL Education are recruiting a Key Stage 4 Autism Teaching Assistant to support learners in an Alternative Provision in the York area. This role involves working with autistic pupils preparing for post-16 pathways, functional learning, and life-skills development.
About the School
The setting provides tailored support for pupils who have struggled in mainstream education due to autism, SEMH needs or communication challenges. Learners access an adapted curriculum that includes GCSE, Functional Skills and vocational subjects, supported by a strong pastoral and keyworker model.
Role Responsibilities
• Support autistic pupils in Key Stage 4 across academic, vocational and life-skills subjects.
• Help deliver structured routines and autism-friendly strategies.
• Assist with transitions, emotional regulation and communication support.
• Provide clear, consistent guidance to help learners prepare for adulthood.
• Work closely with teachers, SEN leads and support professionals.
Requirements
• Experience supporting pupils with autism, especially older learners.
• Understanding of sensory needs, structure and behaviour regulation.
• Strong communication skills and a calm, reassuring approach.
• Ability to follow personalised learning plans and specialist strategies.
• Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to apply.
