SEN Teaching Assistant
Location: York, North Yorkshire
Start Date: January 2026
Salary: £1950 – £2491 per month
Contract: Full Time, Monday to Friday

GSL Education are recruiting a Full-Time SEN Teaching Assistant for a warm, community-focused primary school in West York, starting January 2026. The school is well-regarded locally for its inclusive ethos, strong pastoral care, and commitment to developing the whole child through academics, wellbeing, and physical activity. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a sports or coaching background who is passionate about helping children progress both in the classroom and through physical development.

The Role

This position blends targeted SEN support with active intervention work:

  • Morning Duty: Provide 1:1 support for a Year 6 pupil, helping them access learning, develop confidence, and prepare for the transition to secondary school.
  • Afternoon Duty: Deliver PE-based interventions, including small-group movement sessions, coordination activities, and sports-led confidence programmes that support wellbeing and engagement.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking an SEN Teaching Assistant who is:

  • Patient, encouraging, and able to build strong relationships with upper KS2 pupils.
  • Confident delivering structured sports activities or movement sessions.
  • Able to follow SEN strategies and communicate effectively with teachers and the SENCO.
  • Motivated, reliable, and committed to supporting children’s academic, social, and emotional development.

Essential Teaching Assistant Requirements

  • A sports or coaching background – e.g., sports coaching, PE support, sports science qualification, or leadership experience.
  • Experience working with children or young people.
  • An Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply).
  • Full availability Monday–Friday during term time.
