Autism Teaching Assistant
Start Date: January 2026

Contract: Full Time, Term Time Only
Salary: £23140 – £28600 per annum
GSL Education is recruiting a committed and nurturing Autism Teaching Assistant / Key Worker to join a specialist ASC (Autism Spectrum Condition) provision in York from January 2026. This is a full-time position supporting children and young people with autism, many of whom require personalised learning, emotional regulation support, and consistent relational practice.
About the Setting
The provision supports students who have a diagnosis of ASC and may also present with social, emotional, or communication needs. The environment is calm, structured, and highly supportive, with small groups, personalised plans, and a strong emphasis on building trust and positive relationships. Staff work closely as a team to ensure every young person feels understood, safe, and able to thrive.
The Role
As an Autism Teaching Assistant / Key Worker, you will:
- Provide 1:1 and small-group support for students with ASC
- Build meaningful, consistent relationships using a trauma-informed and autism-friendly approach
- Support communication, emotional regulation, and sensory needs
- Deliver tailored interventions and help students engage with their learning
- Work alongside teachers, pastoral leads, SEN specialists, and external professionals
- Contribute to personalised learning plans and behaviour support strategies
- Help create a stable, structured environment where students feel safe and confident
As the Ideal Autism Teaching Assistant, you should have:
- Experience supporting children or young people with autism (in school, care, youth work, or similar)
- A calm, patient, and emotionally resilient approach
- Understanding of ASC strategies such as visual supports, sensory regulation, and social communication techniques
- Ability to form strong, positive, professional relationships
- A passion for helping students overcome barriers and achieve their potential
Graduates in Psychology, Criminology, Education, Youth Work, Drama, Sports, or similar fields are encouraged to apply, as are experienced SEND support staff.
