Contract Type: Full-time
Salary: £23124 – £28600 per annum (dependent on experience)
About the Role
GSL Education is looking for passionate and caring Teaching Assistants to join a specialist school in York that supports children and young people with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs and other additional learning needs.

Ideal Candidates
We welcome applications from people with a range of experiences and interests, particularly those with backgrounds in:
- Psychology – for understanding behaviour and emotional regulation
- Drama / Performing Arts – for creativity and building confidence
- Sports / Coaching – for teamwork, motivation, and positive role modelling
- Special Educational Needs (SEN) – for experience supporting diverse learners
This role would suit recent graduates, experienced Teaching Assistants, or anyone with transferable skills from youth work, care, or coaching roles.
Key Teaching Assistant Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 or small-group support for students.
- Assist teachers in creating engaging, inclusive lessons.
- Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils.
- Help promote positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing.
- Contribute to a supportive, caring learning environment.
Teaching Assistant Requirements
- A genuine passion for working with children and young people.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, empathy, and a calm, flexible approach.
- Experience with SEMH or SEN students (desirable but not essential).
- Degree or background in Psychology, Drama, Sports, or a related field (advantageous).
