Special Needs Teaching Assistant

Location: York, North Yorkshire

Salary: £85 - £110 per day

Start Date: November 2025

GSL Education are seeking compassionate and dedicated Special Needs Teaching Assistant to work at our Client Secondary school for young people with additional needs in York, North Yorkshire, starting as soon as possible.

Special Needs Teaching Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Support learning activities under the guidance and supervision of the teacher, adapting and differentiating the curriculum to meet the individual needs of students with special educational needs.
  • Design and evaluate specialised learning activities.
  • Encourage students to collaborate and communicate with one another.
  • Contribute to the planning, organisation, and implementation of individual development plans for students.
  • As students are learning, keep an eye on their behaviour and conduct and take action to address any complex, hard, or challenging issues.

Special Needs Teaching Assistant Requirements:

  • Must hold the Right to Work in the UK.
  • Relevant educational or SEN-related qualifications (e.g., Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant qualification).
  • Training in behaviour management and de-escalation techniques is advantageous.
  • Experience working with children who have a variety of disabilities and/or learning difficulties, or an eagerness to go through training.
  • Awareness and understanding of various additional needs such as ASC, ADHD, MLD, and SEMH.
  • Confident in the delivery of pre-planned lessons and interventions.
  • Hold a Child only DBS registered to the update service or be willing to apply for one through GSL Education.
