Location: Tower Hamlets
Salary: £250 – £350 per day (Depending on Experience)
Start Date: January 2026
Contract Type: Long-term maternity cover until August 2026

GSL Education are seeking an exceptional Head of PE to join a high-achieving school in Tower Hamlets.

The role:

As the Head of PE, you will oversee all aspects of the Physical Education department, from curriculum planning and staff management to extracurricular sports programmes. The client school is known for its inclusive ethos and commitment to both academic and personal development, providing a supportive environment for staff and students alike.

Key Responsibilities of a Head of PE:

  • Lead and manage the PE department, ensuring high-quality teaching and learning across all secondary Key Stages.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor an engaging PE curriculum that promotes physical health, teamwork, and resilience.
  • Organise and oversee extracurricular sports clubs, competitions, and inter-school tournaments.
  • Coach and mentor PE staff, providing professional development and performance feedback.
  • Ensure effective assessment and tracking of student progress in line with school policies.
  • Maintain high standards of behaviour, participation, and sportsmanship among students.
  • Manage departmental budgets and maintain sports equipment and facilities.
  • Promote inclusion by encouraging participation from students of all abilities and backgrounds.
  • Liaise with senior leaders to support whole-school initiatives on health, wellbeing, and enrichment.
  • Foster partnerships with local sports organisations and community programmes.

Head of PE Requirements:

  • Hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent certification.
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physical Education, Sports Science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience teaching PE in UK schools, with leadership experience in a PE department.
  • Strong understanding of the UK national curriculum for PE and current educational developments.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Experience in managing extracurricular activities and competitive sports events.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate both staff and students to achieve their potential.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • Have an updated CV and an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to apply via GSL Education.
