About the Role
As an Autism Specialist Teaching Assistant, you will play a key role in helping pupils with autism reach their potential. Working closely with teachers, SEN professionals, and families, you will provide individualised support, create a calm and predictable learning environment, and use strategies to encourage communication, independence, and emotional regulation. Your support will be central to ensuring pupils feel safe, confident, and ready to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 or small group support to pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition.

  • Use visual aids, communication tools, and structured routines to promote engagement and understanding.

  • Support pupils with social interaction, emotional regulation, and sensory needs.

  • Assist the class teacher with lesson preparation and differentiated learning activities.

  • Implement behaviour support plans in a calm, consistent, and compassionate manner.

  • Liaise with teachers, SENCo, and parents to share progress and strategies.

  • Assist with personal care when required, ensuring dignity and respect at all times.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience supporting children with Autism Spectrum Condition or other SEN is essential.

  • Understanding of autism-specific communication and regulation techniques (e.g., PECS, TEACCH, Makaton) is desirable.

  • Ability to build trusting, supportive relationships with pupils and staff.

  • Strong communication and patience in challenging situations.

  • Right to work in the UK and an Enhanced DBS certificate (or willingness to apply).
