SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location:
York, North Yorkshire
Salary: £89 – £110 per day
Contract: Full-time, Term Time Only
Start Date: Immediate / November 2025

GSL Education are working closely with an Alternative Provision in York to appoint a caring and resilient SEN Teaching Assistant to support a KS3 SEMH group on a full-time basis. This class follows a primary-style model, with an emphasis on emotional regulation, relationship building, and developing core learning skills in a nurturing environment.

About The Role as an SEMH Teaching Assistant:

  • Support KS3 pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, using a primary-based approach to learning and wellbeing.
  • Work with small groups and on a 1:1 basis to promote engagement, confidence, and progress across core subjects.
  • Assist with emotional regulation, using calm, consistent, and restorative approaches to behaviour support.
  • Create a safe, structured learning space where pupils feel valued and understood.
  • Collaborate with teachers and the wider pastoral team to deliver personalised support plans and monitor progress.

As The Ideal Candidate, you will have:

  • Experience supporting pupils with SEMH, ADHD, ASC, or other additional needs, ideally within a primary or alternative setting.
  • A nurturing, patient, and proactive approach, with a genuine commitment to helping pupils thrive.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships quickly.
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed or attachment-aware practice is an advantage.
