Autism Support Worker – Have to drive 25 mins from Portsmouth to Compton
Location: Compton
Salary Scale: £13.80 to £15 per hour

GSL Education are seeking a dedicated and passionate Autism Support Worker to join our team. In this role, you will be working closely with children who have learning difficulties (ASD, ADHD, SEMH needs), providing them with the support they need to thrive in an educational setting. Your role will be integral to helping our students overcome challenges and achieve their academic and personal goals.
About the Academy:
The school in Compton which is a 23 mins drive from Portsmouth is a specialist setting for children aged 7–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Many pupils also present with additional challenges such as Autism, ADHD, Attachment Disorders, Anxiety, and Speech and Language difficulties. The school places a strong emphasis on emotional growth, using the THRIVE Approach to support pupils’ social and emotional well-being. This approach helps children build confidence, resilience, and adaptability, enabling them to engage more positively with both learning and everyday life. At the heart of THRIVE are nurturing relationships, combined with play and creative activities, which provide pupils with vital experiences to support their development at every stage.

Key Responsibilities as an Autism Support Worker:
- To support students who struggle with their class work
- Facilitate a fun and friendly learning environment
- To provide support to the class teacher
- To help the class teacher prepare lesson materials and classroom boards
- To keep the classroom a tidy and presentable environment
- To encourage children to do their best
- Help manage classroom behaviour
- Listen to the children read and practice their phonics
Qualifications & Skills required for Autism Support Worker role:
- Experience working with children with special educational needs, particularly those with autism or social and emotional needs (preferred, not essential).
- Have to drive 25 mins from Portsmouth to Compton
- Experience working with SEN (in school, care, or voluntary settings) preferred, not essential
- Knowledge of and experience with behaviour management strategies.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and communicate effectively with parents and other professionals.
- A patient and nurturing approach to working with children.
- Ability to adapt and be flexible in a fast-paced and changing environment.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development in SEN practices and strategies.
