Year Ahead in Education 2011-2012
October is certainly a time of year when the education world is buzzing in preparation for the upcoming year, and the Westminster Education Forum proved the sector to be more dynamic than ever this Autumn, with the range of issues they identified as being critical this academic year at their Year Ahead in Education 2011-2012 seminar.
GSL Education was fortunate enough to attend this special event in which authoritative speakers across the educational horizon brought forward for discussion a plethora of hot topics for information and debate. One particularly lively example was Dr. Patrick Roach, Deputy General Secretary of the NASUWT, who offered what he termed as 'a teachers perspective' on the year ahead and some of its most critical questions, such as what the future for schools will look like, what education is for and how it can 'contribute to individual and community self worth, social justice' and 'national economic prosperity in the 21st century.' Dr. Roach felt that sweeping budget cuts, the current Coalition Government's attention on educational issues, and changing conditions in the recruitment and retention of good teachers characterise the current educational climate as a rather tumultuous one.
Following Dr. Roach was another speaker by the name of Emma Knights, Chief Executive of the National Governors Association, who offered the alternative perspective of school governors in England from all State funded schools. She drew attention to the characteristic divide often referred to between maintained schools and academies, implicitly refusing to acknowledge any hierarchical relationship between the two in doing so.
Not every speech was politically contentious; the changing nature of the role of technology in schools was another widely acknowledged idea as well as a large interest in the authority of exams and standards in today's educational prioritisation. Overall we felt extremely privileged to be in the presence of such interesting and informative ideas, and look forward with our colleagues to discerning what the next Year Ahead in Education will bring to our industry.
