About the Role
As a Speech and Language Support Assistant, you will work closely with the school’s Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) and teaching staff to support pupils with speech, language, and communication difficulties. You will help deliver targeted intervention programmes, assist in classroom activities that promote communication development, and use structured strategies to support children in achieving their communication goals. This role is ideal for someone with a keen interest in speech therapy, communication support, or SEN education, and would suit an aspiring therapist or experienced teaching assistant looking to specialise in this area.
Responsibilities

Support the delivery of speech and language therapy programmes under the guidance of the school’s therapist.

Work 1:1 or with small groups to develop pupils’ communication, vocabulary, and social interaction skills.

Implement visual aids, communication tools, and assistive technology to enhance learning.

Observe and record pupil progress to provide feedback to the therapist and teaching staff.

Encourage positive relationships and promote confidence in communication across all school settings.

Support pupils with personal care, where required, ensuring dignity and respect at all times.

Help maintain an inclusive and encouraging learning environment for all students.
Qualifications

Experience supporting pupils with SEN or communication difficulties is highly desirable.

Knowledge or interest in Speech and Language Therapy approaches or alternative communication methods (e.g., PECs, Makaton).

Excellent communication and listening skills, with a calm and patient manner.

Ability to work collaboratively with therapists, teachers, and parents.

Must have the right to work in the UK and hold (or be willing to apply for) an Enhanced DBS certificate registered on the Update Service.
