Support Worker
Location: York, North Yorkshire
Contract: Full-time / Term-time only
Start Date: October 2025 / November 2025

GSL Education is working with a specialist secondary school in York for students aged 11–19 with a wide range of special educational needs and learning difficulties. We are seeking caring, patient, and resilient Support Workers to join our dedicated team and help our students thrive both academically and personally.

About the role as a Support Worker:

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with complex needs, including ASC, SLD, PMLD, and associated medical or physical needs.
  • Assist in delivering engaging, accessible lessons tailored to individual learning requirements.
  • Support pupils with communication, personal care, and mobility as required.
  • Use a range of strategies, including sensory activities, visual supports, and communication aids (e.g. Makaton, PECS), to promote independence and engagement.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, encouraging confidence, resilience, and social development.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and families to support each pupil’s Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP).

The Ideal Support Worker Will Have:

  • A genuine passion for supporting young people with special educational needs.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to stay calm under pressure.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in SEN or care settings is desirable but not essential, as full training will be provided.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
